Rev Naomi Rosenberg When I was growing up as a young Christian worshipping in the Lutheran Church, I imagined myself possibly working for the church as a deaconess, but this dream did not happen as I married young, became a nurse and as soon as I graduated had a family.
I later developed a sense that in the later part of my life I would be working in some form of ministry along side of my husband. In 1990 I joined the Uniting Church of Australia (UCA) and later (2003) began studying theology with my husband, who was studying to be a Minister of the Word at the then Parkin Wesley College (SA), so I could add some skills to whatever church we would be called to. I then felt, stemming from the encouragement of my lecturers and from experienced ministers, that I had the leadership capabilities, the tertiary qualifications, the spiritual maturity and the adequate gifts to fulfil the role of Lay Pastor. |

Rev Juleen Villis
I am unable to remember much about my early church life, except that about the age of 12 I started to have a real desire to attend our local church. I moved to Adelaide aged 15 and started attending Woodville UC with a school friend. She gave me a copy of the Living Bible and it seemed to come alive to me. At the age of 24 while living and teaching in Pt Augusta I decided to make a serious commitment to God and gave my life to Jesus Christ. I first heard a call to ministry in the early 90’s when a woman asked me if I had ever thought about being a priest. In my head I said ‘definitely not’! During my teaching years I had contact with many people who struggled greatly with life, and I noticed that they were largely absent in churches; the very people Jesus would have spent most time with. While doing some volunteer work in Mobilong Prison and meeting some of the families, I started to get a sense that this is where my life’s work would be. In 2001 I began a bachelor of Theology at Tabor Adelaide and during that time, whilst doing an assignment on the history of UCA I first read a brochure on being a Deacon in the UC. This brochure affected me deeply, and I felt strongly that God was calling me to be a Deacon. |
